Excellent reference book - well researched
I got this book for my dad who is 70 and has very limited vision. He's found this to be an excellent reference book and is really pleased with it.The book looks in great detail at ships in the context of British history - from the iconic to the less famous ships that have shaped the shipping industry and our naval history. The book is well laid out with good quality printing and well researched - with clear and interesting writing and beautiful illustrative photos. The author doesn't just focus on the ships - but also the people involved in the creation of them - the people that commisioned or built them. It also looks at the journeys these boats took - providing broad understanding. The book looks at well known ships like the Mary Rose, The Victory, The Cutty Sark and HMS Belfast as well as more modern ships, covering merchant and coastal sailing ships, the change from sail to steam (The Warrior, The Great Britain), early 20th century naval, coastal steamers and harbour craft as well as second world war and post war naval ships. This is a lovely, comprehensive guide - thoroughly recommended.

Britain's Historic Ships - Key to Greatness of an Island Nation
In an age where most have forgotten that Britain is an island nation, this book sets out an excellent but readable record of the ships that forged our trade routes, protected our shores and built the nation. Informative and with attractive and well composed photography, this is a must for those who have an interest in merchant marine and naval history.

Ships Galore.
A cracking insight to what can be viewed around the British Coast. A brief introductory history to each ship listed, should allow you to plan your visit, and be in possesion of a few facts to help with the enjoyment. If you thought that very little has been preserved of our Maritme history, this Book will enlighten you. Great pictures as well.

historic ships
This book should have been entitled "Britains Preserved Historic Ships" as it deals only with ships that have been preserved by trusts or in some cases by individuals. The book ranges from the 16th century Mary Rose to the Royal Yacht Britannia and HMS Bristol the youngest. For each ship there are historical notes, description of design and construction, details of active service and construction.Ships taking part at Trafalgar,Jutland, Dunkirk,D-day,Korea,the Falklands and The Gulf are included. The book is well written and researched but is oh limited interest as it deals only with preserved ships many of which are small and only of local interest only.
