Óscar Arístides Renta Fiallo (22 July 1932 – 20 October 2014), known professionally as Oscar de la Renta, was an Dominican American fashion designer and couturier, with an amazing couture pedigree, working in the golden age of haute couture. He was trained by the greatest of couturiers Cristobal Balenciaga in Paris. De la Renta became internationally known in the 1960’s as one of a number of couturiers who dressed the late Jacqueline Kennedy. In Paris he worked for the historic couture houses of Lanvin and Balmain. In 1963, de la Renta turned to the great Diana Vreeland the editor-in-chief of American Vogue for advice because he really wanted to move into ready to wear as it was more financially viable. Vreeland told him to go to the New York salon of the great cosmetic icon Elizabeth Arden to build his reputation. De la Renta proceeded to work for Arden for two years before he went to work for Jane Derby an American fashion house. When Derby died in August 1965, de la Renta took over the label. In 1977, de la Renta launched his first fragrance, OSCAR. From 1993 to 2002, de la Renta designed the haute couture collection for the house of Balmain. In 2001 he created his first accessories line. In 2004; he added a less expensive line of clothing called O Oscar.
